* Chapter One.

The Holy Spirit Person.

“Teach me to do your will, for you are my God may your good Spirit lead me on level ground”. (Psalms 143.10)

The belief that the Holy Spirit is a person is a truth of the
Christian Faith.

* Several biblical passages confirm this belief.

Many sects and heresies present the Holy Spirit as an influence,
an energy or the active force of God.

The Word of God, however, reveals to us that the Holy Spirit is a
person because he has a mind, a will, and emotions.

We can sadden the Holy Spirit.

If we can make him sad, it is obvious that he is a being and has emotions.

“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were
sealed for the day of redemption.” (Eph. 4.30)

"He suffers when we sin and grieves with the manifestations of
our sin. By living in our hearts."
(1 Co. 3.16-17).

He grants us power over sin, lights up our thoughts so we can understand the word of God, and guide us daily with the conviction that we are sons of God.

As a person, the Holy Spirit is jealous and watchesover us.

“ Unfaithful creatures! Do you not know that friendship with the
world is enmity with God?

Therefore, whoever wishes to be a
friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

- Or do you suppose it is in vain that the scripture says,

“He yearns jealousy
over the spirit which he has made to dwell in us”. (James 4.4-5)

The characteristics of the Holy Spirit shown in the Bible are of a
person and not of an influence or a force.

Look at other manifestations of the Holy Spirit in the life of the church.

“God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For what person knows a man’s thoughts except the spirit of the man which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.”
(1 Co. 2:10-11)

“- All these are inspired by one and the same Spirit, who
apportions to each one individually as he wills.”
(1 Co. 12:11)

According to the verses above, the gifts of the Holy Spirit or the
charismatic (from the Greek word Karisma) gifts are shared
according to the sovereign will of the Holy Spirit.

If we are attentive, He will prevent us from going to places not
proposed by God even if the purpose intended is to preach the
gospel.

The apostles Paul and Silas were prevented from preaching the
gospel in the city of Bithynia.

They were barred from preaching
there because of the sovereign decision of the Holy Spirit.

“- And when they had come opposite My ‘Sai, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them”.
(Acts 16.7)

Is it rightful to preach the gospel? Yes.

However, God’s plans for Paul in that moment was for him to preach in Europe and not in Asia.

Only the Spirit in his divine duties could act this way.

It is part of the Holy Spirit’s mission to show us which way to follow or
to redirect us to places where we should be.

The Holy Spirit speaks directly to us about which way to go.

He did that to Philip:

“And the Spirit said to Philip, ‘Go up and join this chariot’”.
(Acts 8.29)

* The Divine Trinity.
(Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit)

Another way that we know the Holy Spirit is God is that he is
treated equally with the other two persons of the Holy Trinity.

We know that Father and the Son are distinct beings. The Holy Spirit
is in the same level as them.

Jesus taught the disciples to baptize in the name of the Father,
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 28.19)

The apostle Paul taught us to bless people in the name of the
Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

“ The grace of the Lord
Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy
Spirit be with you all”.
(2 Co. 13.14)

* The Holy Spirit is God in truth, as are the God Father and God Son.

In the relationship between Trinity and man, it is correct to say that the Holy Spirit comes from the Father as well as from the Son. If the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father, we can say that
they are the same in personality, nature, and essence.

The Trinity exists and works the same way water exists and works in solid, liquid and gaseous states.

The Father has the primacy.

Jesus, the only begotten Son, acts in the universe validated by
the Father who said.

“This is my beloved Son, listen to him.” (Mark 9.7)

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of the Father and of the Son, because
he is called the Spirit of the LORD and the Spirit of Jesus.

“Now, the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is,
there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the
glory of the Lord, are being changed into his likeness from one. D
egree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit”. (2 Co. 3:17-18)

“Yes, and I shall rejoice. For I know that through your prayers
and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my
deliverance”. (Philp. 1.19)

“... but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them.” (Acts 16.7)

* Jesus said “I and the Father are one”. (John 10.30)

“ There are three witnesses, the Spirit, the water, and the blood;
and these three agree.” (1 John 5.8)

* Ananias, Sapphira and the Holy Spirit.

Ananias and Sapphira driven by greed, died because of the lies
they told the apostle Peter.

* The consequence was clear: “You have not lied just to human beings but to God”.

“- Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira,
also sold a piece of property.

- With his wife’s full knowledge he
kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and
put it at the apostles’ feet.

- Then Peter said:

“Ananias, how is it
that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy
Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received
for the land?

- Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made
you think of doing such a thing?    You have not lied just to human
beings but to God.”

- When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened

- Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and
carried him out and buried him.

* Three hours later...

 - About three hours later, his wife
came in, not knowing what had happened.

- Peter asked her:

“Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?”

“Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”

- Peter said to her:

“How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carr.you out also.”

 - At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband.

- Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events”.   (Acts 5.1-11)

Ananias and Sapphira were treated severely because the church was in its beginning stages.

* This episode caused great fear in the entire church.

The Holy Spirit was starting his dispensation in front of the church.

Ananias and Sapphira plot against the Spirit of the Lord to tempt Him.

“But they rebelled and grieved His Set-apart Spirit, so He turned
against them as an enemy, and He fought against them.”                    (Isaiah 63.10)

Jesus said referring to the Holy Spirit:

“ Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be
forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not
be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.”
(Matthew 12.32)

God help us so we do not make the same mistake as Ananias
and Sapphira did!
